Well, it's relative. For first century Roman times, having a roof over your head, something besides rags on your back, and food in your belly, just for talking to people, wasn't too shabby. Most had to endure backbreaking labor to accomplish that. Hard times, unless you were a Roman citizen of standing, and as Acfs tells us, converts sold all their worldly goods and set the proceeds at their religious leader's feet for distribution to the faithful, which had to have some possibilities, I'd think.
